Brief History of PG McMahon Solicitors LLP

The firm was founded in 1963 by the late Garry McMahon, a notable figure from Listowel, who passed away in 2008. He was the son of "the Master," the renowned writer, dramatist, folklorist, and ballad maker, Bryan McMahon.

Garry played Gaelic football with his local club, Listowel Emmets, and was a member of the senior Kerry County football team from 1958 until 1962. For 58 years, from 1962 until 2020, he held the record for scoring the fastest goal in the final of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. He also earned two All-Ireland medals.

His debut was against Cork in the 1959 Munster Senior Football Championship, where he scored two goals and two points in the first half. This performance prompted match commentator Micheal O'Hehir to remark, "This morning Garry McMahon was a son of a famous father; this evening, Bryan McMahon is the father of a famous son."

In addition to his football achievements, Garry was a talented musician who toured the USA with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. In his later years, he wrote many fine songs and ballads and recorded a CD titled "The Songman." He also composed two masses in Irish.

Garry trained as a solicitor with his uncle, Donal T. Ryan, in Cashel, County Tipperary.

The firm's first office was located at North Quay, Newcastle West. In 1973, Garry moved the office to the Square in Newcastle West (above Dooley's Pharmacy) after being joined by his brother, Owen McMahon, who is still with the practice.

In 2009, Garry's son, Rossa McMahon, joined the firm, bringing a wealth of expertise gained from working in some of the largest law firms in Dublin.

In 2024, the practice relocated from the Square in Newcastle West to Bishop Street in Newcastle West.

I had the honour and privilege of being Garry's last apprentice, and he was truly a master to learn from! I began my apprenticeship in August 1994 and qualified as a solicitor in 1997. I was fortunate to be offered a permanent position upon qualification and have remained with the practice ever since.
