A Special Tradition and a Special Day in Newcastle West District Court

13/06/2026

Yesterday was a particularly proud day for all of us at P.G. McMahon Solicitors LLP as our newly qualified solicitor, Grace McKinley was formally introduced to Judge Carol Anne Coolican at Newcastle West District Court.

While to some this may appear to be a simple court appearance, those within the legal profession know that it marks an important milestone in a solicitor's career. It is a longstanding tradition that a newly qualified solicitor is formally presented to the court and welcomed into the legal community in which they will practise. Traditions and customs such as these remain an important part of the legal profession, connecting generations of practitioners and reminding us that we are custodians of a profession built on service, respect and continuity.

It was an especially significant occasion for our firm. The last time a solicitor from our office was introduced to the District Court was seventeen years ago, making yesterday a memorable day for everyone connected with the practice.

Thankfully, this tradition remains alive and well in Newcastle West. The honour of introducing a newly qualified solicitor falls to the most senior practitioner present in court on the day. On this occasion, that distinction belonged to our colleague Michael O'Donnell, Solicitor, who runs a well-established legal practice in Rathkeale, County Limerick, who performed the role with great professionalism.

For me personally, it added another layer of significance to the occasion. Michael and I studied together for our BCL degree in University College Cork in the early 1990s. Like many students of that era, we could hardly have imagined where our legal careers would lead us. To stand in court more than three decades later and watch Michael introduce a newly qualified solicitor from our own firm was a reminder of how quickly the years pass and how enduring the friendships formed during those college years can be.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican warmly welcomed Grace to the District Court and wished her every success in her future career. Detective Inspector Barry Manton, on behalf of An Garda Síochána, also extended a welcome, reflecting the collegial spirit that exists among all those involved in the administration of justice in West Limerick.

Grace spoke of the privilege of being welcomed into the legal community of West Limerick, acknowledged the responsibilities that come with practising before the courts, and expressed her hope to serve her clients with professionalism and integrity while assisting the court in the administration of justice to the very best of her ability.

It was also wonderful to see Grace's parents present to witness the occasion. Behind every newly qualified professional stands years of encouragement, sacrifice and support from family, and it was fitting that they were there to share in such an important milestone.

The occasion also prompted reflection on a broader issue facing the legal profession. Across Ireland, many regional and rural practices are experiencing increasing difficulty in attracting and retaining young solicitors. Yet firms such as ours provide a unique opportunity for young practitioners to gain broad experience across many areas of law while playing an important role within their local communities.

The continued presence of solicitors in rural towns is not simply a professional issue; it is a community issue. Local access to legal services is essential, particularly for older members of society who may find it difficult to travel significant distances to larger urban centres. If legal services become increasingly concentrated in major cities, local communities risk losing an important professional resource that has traditionally been available on their doorstep.

That is why it is so encouraging to see talented young solicitors like Grace choosing to build their careers in regional practice. It is equally encouraging to see the Law Society continuing its efforts to promote opportunities in rural Ireland and to ensure that graduates understand the rewarding careers available outside the major cities.

Yesterday was ultimately about one young solicitor beginning the next chapter of her professional journey. However, it was also a reminder of the value of tradition, the importance of community, and the need to ensure that future generations continue to provide legal services in towns and villages throughout Ireland.

From everyone at P.G. McMahon Solicitors LLP, we wish Grace every success in what promises to be a long and rewarding career.
